About Cleanings and Exams
Having a dental practice perform a checkup and regular cleaning gives a preventive approach to dental care. These general dentistry treatments help prevent problems with your teeth, gums and jaw bones, or they catch and manage problems before they worsen. During your visit, our doctors will take a picture of the current standing of your dental health and what would be needed to keep your oral hygiene in its best state.
Why Regular Visits Are Worth It
Much of the value of a routine visit is in what it prevents. Decay found early may need only a small filling; the same decay found later can need a root canal and crown. Gum inflammation caught early is often reversible, while advanced gum disease can lead to bone and tooth loss. Professional cleaning also removes what home care cannot. Once plaque hardens into tartar, it bonds to the tooth and has to be removed with instruments. That buildup irritates the gums and contributes to decay near the gumline. For patients with crowns, bridges or implants, regular exams are also when we check that those restorations are sound and the tissue around them is healthy.
What to Expect
Your hygienist removes plaque and tartar above and below the gumline, then polishes the teeth so the surfaces are smooth. Gum health is checked, and any areas of concern are noted. Dr. Naiman then examines your teeth, gums, bite and existing dental work, and screens the soft tissues of the mouth. Digital X-rays may be taken when needed to check between teeth and below the gums. Afterward you will hear plainly what was found and what, if anything, needs attention. If treatment is recommended, we explain why and what the options are before anything is scheduled.
